What I love about my profession: Exploring fashion and style through new products, education and innovative techniques. It’s such a rewarding job to make people feel amazing about themselves.

What is your favorite decade of fashion? The 1980s because of the bright neon colors, and asymmetrical styles; I love strong shapes and colors!

If you could do a make-over on anyone, who would it be? Donald Trump…no more comb-over!

andrea

Andrea Birst

Owner

Hometown: Rolette, ND

Services: Hair cuts, hair color, pedicures, shellac manicures, face waxing

Training and experience: RD Hairstyling College; eight years professional experience with Spa D’Athena

Best thing about working at Glance: I am truly blessed to work with such amazing people.

What I love about my profession: As the owner of Glance, I’m attending both hair shows and business education classes to stay on top of industry trends. To me, learning is growing.

What is your favorite decade of fashion? The 1950s; I have always been a fan of older fashion.  I love the clothing from the fifties: the collared shirts, dresses and buttons and of course, all the hats, I love hats! Hair was gorgeous in the fifties and full of soft curls.  I love that in older fashion women always looked “dressed” for the day: beautiful and neat.  Sloppy sweats and messy ponytails were not popular.

If you could do a make-over on anyone, who would it be? I gave this a great deal of thought and I decided that I think I would love to treat all of my staff to a makeover.  Not because I feel they look bad or need a change by any means, but because (like in any profession) we are always the last customers to get attention.  A makeover is a nice pampering treat and they are all awesome and deserve a lot of pampering because of their hard work and dedication they give to their customers every day!

Best thing about working at Glance: Fun atmosphere, experienced staff, and quality of products and services.

What I love about my profession: Making someone the most confident and fashionable they can be. Providing a relaxing fun and quality salon service. Being a daymaker.

What is your favorite decade of fashion? The 2000s because of the constant innovation in hair and make-up.  We are always pushing the boundaries and with the latest technologies and styles, we continue to do so.  Every kind of style is accepted so the style options are limitless.

If you could do a make-over on anyone, who would it be? Jackie Onassis, because she was such an iconic woman of fashion as well as a First Lady.  It would have been great to make over such an influential woman; I would have liked to be a part of that time.

What is your favorite decade of fashion? The 1980s because I love the textures and colors that were explored in hair and clothing.

If you could do a make-over on anyone, who would it be? Jennifer Aniston, I think she should try being a brunette rather than a blonde.  A darker color would enhance her skin and eye color.

missee

Missee Gietzen

Stylist/Permanent Makeup Artist

Services: Hair cuts, hair color, creative hair color, updos, facial waxing, permanent makeup (micropigmentation): including top and bottom eyeliner, eyebrows, and full lip color

Training: American Institute of Intradermal Cosmetics

What you should know about permanent makeup: I use topical anesthetic developed specifically for these procedures, so it does not hurt.  Also, micropigmentation lasts a long time, but not forever. Most clients get retouches every year or two. I spend a lot of time consulting with clients before doing any micropigmentation. I offer a lot of guidance so that what we do accentuates and complements your features.

What is your favorite decade of fashion? I love the 1950s. The poodle skirts were so cute and they had great music for the sock hop parties!

If you could do a make-over on anyone, who would it be? Simon Cowell, he needs to lose the white t-shirt he wears everyday and that hairstyle needs an update…boring!

What is your favorite decade of fashion? Definitely the 1920s, everything was so glamorous and romantic.  The finger waves and pin curls gave such a soft look.  I love that people still re-create that look in today’s fashion and beauty industry.

If you could do a make-over on anyone, who would it be? Cher, because she has had such long hair FOREVER. It would be nice to see something new and modern with more of a soft and natural look to soften her facial features.

What is your favorite decade of fashion? The 2010s because styles are always changing and evolving.  Today’s fashion and trends are an accumulation of past decades and styles, it is so fun to change along with the times!

If you could do a make-over on anyone, who would it be? There isn’t one specific person.  Whenever I am out and about, I’m always noticing people’s styles and think to myself about how I could enhance their look.

What I love about my profession: I love to enhance people’s features, whether it’s offering a certain haircut or color; or even nail polish color to enhance their skin tone.  I love to meet new people and make their day.

What is your favorite decade of fashion? I would have to say the 20s are my favorite. Finger waves are beautiful and I love the clean-cut, swept-back look on men.

If you could do a make-over on anyone, who would it be? I would say my sister, not that she needs one but I’ve always wanted to add a little dimension to her hair.  I don’t think she could sit still that long though…

What is your favorite decade of fashion? The 1920s because hair and clothing was so classic!

If you could do a make-over on anyone, who would it be? My mother-in-law.  She is always taking care of everyone else and puts herself last.  She deserves to be pampered!

heidi

Heidi Kindschi

Stylist

Hometown: Bismarck, ND

Services: Hair cuts, hair color, pedicures, manicures, makeup

Training: Antoine Du Chez Academy

Best thing about Glance: The high level of customer service. Clients enjoy the spa experience, including the complimentary chocolate, wine, and beer. This isn’t a typical ‘get in and get out’ salon—it’s a really special place.

What I love about my profession: Pushing the limits with hairstyles and makeup. I like the creative aspect. Of course, I stay within the realm of what the client wants, but it’s great to do something unique.

What is your favorite decade of fashion? The 1920s because I love flapper dresses and the finger wave hairstyles.  It seemed to be a very care-free and fun time for style.

If you could do a make-over on anyone, who would it be? My mother, she is the most selfless person and hardest worker I’ve ever met.  If only I could get her to sit and relax long enough!

Best thing about working at Glance: The atmosphere and professional appearance of Glance puts people at east knowing and feeling they are getting the best possible salon experience and service.

What I love about my profession: I love being able to instill confidence in someone through my work with their hair, nails, etc.  Seeing their faced light up in the mirror after being transformed in a newer, more confident person is what keeps my passion alive!  I love putting a smile on someone’s face.

What is your favorite decade of fashion? The 1960s are by far my favorite.  The 60s had so many styles that are still popular today, including the beehive, straightened styles, the smokey eye, and cat eye liner.

If you could do a make-over on anyone, who would it be? If there was anyone in the world I could makeover, it would be my mom.  Not because she needs one but because she is the most deserving person I know.  She always puts other’s needs before her own.  She doesn’t give herself the relaxation and time to make herself feel beautiful and confident.  I would love more than anything to give my mom a beautiful transformation, instill her with confidence, and make her feel like a million dollars.

Secret to being a great stylist: Your appearance is a part of who you are. Open communication is important to finding a style that suits you, your personality and your lifestyle.

What is your favorite decade of fashion? I loved the pin curls and sets from the 1940s and the smoother on top and curls on the bottom from the 1950s so women could wear hats or berets.  Make-up became more important because movies were in color so bright red lipstick and nail polish became popular.  I also like the simpler hair styles from the 1960s.  I like the makeup from the 1980s  because of the wide range of color.

If you could do a make-over on anyone, who would it be? Hillary Clinton because she needs a change since she has looked the same for a long time.  I also have a client who is a mom of four children and her husband travels a lot, I would love to give her some ‘me’ time.

If you could do a make-over on anyone, who would it be? Duck Dynasty…all of them! I’d love to see them clean-shaven and spiffed up.

What I love about my profession: Highlights and three-dimensional color. It’s fun to transform someone’s look and make my guests feel great about themselves.

What is your favorite decade of fashion? The Roaring 20s had the best fashion.  It was all about women expressing themselves and taking risks.  They were rebelling against social norms and venturing into new styles of clothing and hair.  I think that is what fashion is still about….going away from the expected and expressing yourself!

What is your favorite decade of fashion? I love the 1970s!  Everything was so bright and fun.  I loved the extreme bell bottoms and all of the sparkly, short dresses.  It is fun to see some of that translated into our styles today.  Makeup was starting to push the boundaries and hair was left longer with many layers to give it the messy wind-blown look.  It was great!

If you could do a make-over on anyone, who would it be? Lady Gaga.  She has such a fun personality, but I feel she covers up her beauty by dressing so elaborately. I have seen her only a few times dressed normally and she is gorgeous!  I would love to give her an old Hollywood look; she would make an amazing new version of Marilyn Monroe.

If you could do a make-over on anyone, who would it be? Mimi from the Drew Carey show because she looks ridiculous!
